"A brief history” of the Express Travel Group (ETG)


Orient Express Travel Group (OETG) was established in Melbourne in 1983. In November 2003, the company was bought by the incumbent CEO Tom Manwaring, who with his strong vision and commitment to the company, its employees, customers and suppliers, has grown the company profitably throughout Australia. In November 2009, a new partnership was formed with a 50% shareholding being purchased by CTG Investments.

In February 2015, the Company changed its name to Express Travel Group (ETG). This was to better reflect the nature and focus of the business and its future strategic direction. At the same time, the Company relocated its head office from 353 Exhibition Street, Melbourne to Level 2,160 Queen Street, Melbourne.

With offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, the Company has developed into one of the most respected travel groups in the country, representing the largest group of independent travel agencies in Australia. These agencies are members of the Company's agency groups, the Select Travel Group and the Independent Travel Group. ETG remains the largest provider of Asia destination passengers from Australia, and is one of the main revenue agents for Cathay Pacific Airways, Singapore Airlines, China Southern Airlines, THAI Airways and Malaysia Airlines.

The vision for the future is for the Company to become one of Australia’s leading independent integrated travel agreggators across consolidation, retail and wholesale. It is to be a business of reference and one which offers profitable, sustained employment for staff and service excellence to all customers.




As a single entity, ETG is the largest provider of regional traffic to South East Asia and North Asia and is one of the largest independent travel organisations in Australia.

  • Express Ticketing, the Consolidation & Operations division, specialises in promoting and marketing airlines’ products to travel agencies. This division was formed when the Company was started 32 years ago and the need for the provision of a service to independent agencies was identified. 
  • Preferred travel agency membership groups are the “Select Travel Group” which was established almost 30 years ago and the "Independent Travel Group" established 9 years ago, which now exceed 600 travel agencies in total nationally. 
  • italktravel, the retail network offering Independent Travel group members a fully branded franchise option was formed in 2013. At present, 27 stores are operating nationally, with more to open during 2015.
  • Available to all members is the Express Ticketing suite of products which provides various core and optional products. These range from availability of product from over 100 air, land and cruise preferred partners, to technology through Express Ticket and innovative Express Marketing Tools, Operations support and more.
  • State of the art ticketing and web-based fares distribution system, Express Ticket, provides a range of benefits to members. These include access thousands of airfares daily, with prompt and convenient 24/7 fares and ticketing access featuring a sophisticated airfare validation engine, 24 hour ticket turnaround; all backed by guarantees and exceptional service.
  • Within the Retail division, operated by ETG, are Orient Express Travel in Melbourne and ChungPak Travel in Sydney CBD and Chatswood. ChungPak Travel was merged into the Sydney operation in November 2005.
  • The company currently employs 75 permanent employees and encourages a culture of mutual respect, understanding and open communication through its innovative people management practices and strong commitment to teamwork and customer service.
